Now it s time to gently place the metal patch on top of the gutter hole.

How to fix hole in gutter.

Locate the hole then remove all loose debris such as moss leaves and twigs from around the damaged area. Feather the roofing cement out on the surrounding area to flatten any steep edges. If there s any rust around the hole cut it out with aviation snips. Patch small holes with roofing cement.

Press it towards the gutter and leave it to dry. This way the cement will easily stick to a big part of the surface of the patch and will attach it better. If the holes are larger than nail holes use tin snips to cut a strip of flashing the same amterial as the gutter wide enough to fill the area. Wearing leather work gloves scrub the area clean with a stiff bristle wire brush.

Bend the strip to fit and embed the flashing in the cement. Clean around the damaged area with a brush and warm soapy water to remove more stubborn. Trim the metal patch slightly smaller than the cemented area and firmly press it down. Scrub the inside of the gutter around the hole using a wire brush dipped in water to remove rust.

Use a putty knife to spread the cement generously around the hole. Apply plastic roofing cement over small holes. Allow the insides of the gutters to dry out and brush leaking seams clean. After the new gutter patch is completely dry you can cover it with some sealant to finish the repair.

Spray the gutter channel with water and let it dry. This will provide security against water and make it last a little longer. Just make sure the patch covers the entire hole and some of the space around it. Simply squeeze into cracks and holes then apply a further coating around the entire gutter joint.

Once the metal dries rub it with an abrasive pad then wipe away dust and allow to dry completely. Once you ve removed the bigger pieces of debris use a hose to wash the remainder down the gutter s downspout. Carefully bring the hose up the ladder with you and move the spray and debris towards the downspout opening. Apply silicone or special gutter caulking compound along the seams on the inside and outside to seal the leaks as shown above.

You can buy gutter caulking compound online.
